Save the World in 2026: is it worth playing?

Save the World is the part of Fortnite that came first: a co-op campaign where you and your squad build forts, lay traps and fight off husks. For most of its life it was a paid mode. That changed on April 16, 2026, when Epic made it free-to-play on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, cloud and Nintendo Switch 2.

What going free changed

• New players no longer need to buy anything to start the campaign.
• Existing players received Superchargers, Vouchers and Gold on launch day as a thank-you.
• Founders, the players who bought the mode earlier, keep earning V-Bucks through Daily Quests, Mission Alerts, Storm Shield Defense missions and existing challenges, according to Epic.

That last point is one of the main reasons veterans keep logging in. Epic's announcement describes it as something Founders continue to get, so new free players should not assume the same V-Bucks rewards apply to them. Epic's support page says players who are not Founders cannot earn V-Bucks from Save the World gameplay; Epic's update notes show them getting X-Ray Tickets from those rewards instead, and X-Ray Tickets only buy Llamas inside Save the World.

What is running right now

The v42.10 update on September 3 brought back Hexsylvania, a gothic Ventures zone of castles, forests and catacombs that stays open until November 18. Ventures is the seasonal mode where you climb a fresh progression track under a special modifier. This time it is Short Range: enemies close to you or your Defenders take extra damage, enemies further away take less, and traps are weaker at range too. The same update also:

• reopened five Dungeons (Crypts, Inferno, Lab, Grotto and Labyrinth), with Heroes and cosmetics tied to their quests;
• replaced Rad Llamas with Fortnitemares Llamas, which you buy with 500 Candy earned from missions;
• reworked Refuel the Homebase, swapping its 20-minute timer for up to four in-game days and a guided A-to-H order of Siphons;
• added the Clip's Nightmare questline, which unlocks the Cassie "Clip" Lipman hero if you finish it before September 30.

The August v42.00 update is worth knowing about too. It added a Play With Others console in Homebase that matchmakes you straight into any zone you have unlocked, cut loading times on PC and let players recruit Birthday Brigade heroes from the Collection Book.

Things to know before you start

• It is a slow burn. Much of the reward loop is collecting Heroes, weapons and Survivors from Llamas, quests and Event Items over many missions, not winning a single match.
• It is built for co-op. In our view it is at its best with friends, and the new Play With Others console makes finding a group quicker if you do not have one.
• Rewards rotate. Epic adds new questlines and Event Items each week of the Ventures season, and Mission Alerts are shown in-game, so check the map and the Event Items section when you log in. We do not mirror Mission Alerts on this site: we have not found a public, keyless data source for them, and we will not use Epic account logins to scrape them. Our verdict

This is our opinion rather than a fact: if you enjoy building, tower defence and long-term progression, Save the World is an easy yes now that it costs nothing to try, and the Hexsylvania Ventures season is a good way to see what it is about before November 18. If you want quick matches, competitive play or new cosmetics every week, Battle Royale and its sister modes will suit you better.
