AION began as a story about a broken Tower and two peoples who remember its fall differently. Its sequel starts two centuries later. This is the story so far in plain words, with the places where the sources disagree marked.
Everything before the last beat is the first game. It is the background AION 2 assumes you know, and the first game's story is not spoiled here beyond what AION 2 itself tells you.
The god AION made Atreia and, at its centre, the Tower of Eternity. He also made the Drakan, a dragon-like people, to watch over it.
Five of the Drakan's leaders, the Dragon Lords, gave up the name AION had given them and became the Balaur. One account says the Balaur were the first people AION made; another says the Drakan were. The story does not settle it.
AION answered with twelve Empyrean Lords. Using aether they raised a barrier around the Tower, and the humans sheltered inside it were given flight and power: the Daevas. The long war that followed is called the Millennium War.
A peace meeting at the foot of the Tower went wrong and the Balaur struck. The Tower broke, the world split into sunlit Elysea and dark Asmodae with the Abyss between, and the survivors became the Elyos and the Asmodians. Each side tells it differently; the Elyos hold the Asmodians to blame. Two Lords, Siel and Israphel, are said to have given their life energy to save what they could.
AION 2 is set about two centuries later. The Lords gave themselves to raise the Bulwark, the Daevas' power is running low, and you are one of the Daevas left outside it, on Balaur-held land.
The world of AION. In the first game it is a shattered world split in two; in AION 2 it is the same world, two centuries on.
The great Tower at the heart of Atreia. AION 2's own quests call it the Tower of AION. Its fall is the event the whole story turns on.
A human who has risen above mortal limits: wings, power and a long life. Both Elyos and Asmodians are Daevas, and so are you.
The twelve beings the god AION made to stand against the Balaur. Five stand behind each side, and two more, Siel and Israphel, are remembered for a last act at the Cataclysm.
The dragon-kin who turned against the Tower. Their ruling Dragon Lords are the main enemy of both sides in both games.
The force the Lords used to raise their barrier around the Tower, the barrier that changed the humans inside into Daevas.
AION's own power in AION 2, and what Daevas draw their strength from. It is running low, and gathering it is a recurring chore of the story.
The barrier AION 2's Lords gave themselves to raise. Safety is said to lie inside it; you live outside, on Balaur-held land.
A Daeva twisted into a monster by Balaur experiments. A Daeva who has become a Sura is cremated, by custom, so a Daeva who escapes the Balaur is checked before anyone trusts them.
The broken space between the two halves of the world, where both sides fight without end.
A people who lived side by side with the Daevas on Poeta. Their elder, Daminu, sets the ascension trial at Clione Lake.
A voice in your own head in AION 2: AION's will, set deep in your mind, which guides each of your ascensions.
