Elyos or Asmodian: what the choice changes in AION 2
It is permanent, it decides whose server you live on and who you fight in the Abyss, and it does not touch your class. Everything else is lore, looks and one disputed claim.

The first real decision in AION 2 is the one you cannot undo. Pick Elyos or Asmodian and you have chosen your server, your half of the world, your enemies and your silhouette. What you have not chosen is your class or, as far as anyone can show, your stats. Here is what the choice does and does not change, sourced.
It is permanent
Mein-MMO's faction guide and its beginner tips both state the choice cannot be changed; switching means a new character. That matches how the servers are built.
It decides your server
NC's 2025 press release on the game's core content says the factions have separate starting regions and separate servers "for improved faction balance". The Launch Scale Test confirmed it in practice: the EU servers NC opened on September 17 came in faction pairs, Vaizel (Elyos) with Triniel (Asmodian), Kaisinel (Elyos) with Lumiel (Asmodian). Mein-MMO describes the result as servers that are "faction-internal": in the open world you only meet your own side. Cross-faction contact happens in instanced PvP, the Abyss, Rifts and events. NC's Early Access notice adds that Abyss matchmaking pairs servers "based on how far along and how strong each server is", so your opposition is another server, not another half of yours.
One consequence worth spelling out: if your friends roll the other faction, you will never share a town, a quest hub or a guild. Coordinate before you create.
It decides your half of Atreia
Elyos start in Poeta and move through Verteron and the Cantas Valley campaign; Asmodians start in Ishalgen and move through Altgard and what AION2 Hub calls the Dark campaign. Both paths converge on Krao Cave at the level-45 cap. Mein-MMO paints the contrast: sunlit, colourful Elysea with ancient temples for the Elyos, snowy canyons and dark fortresses in Asmodae for the Asmodians. In Korea, Chapter 1 continued the split with Eltnen for Elyos and Morheim for Asmodians at levels 45-50; that content is not in the global launch.
It decides how you look
Elyos get symmetrical features, light skin and white-or-gold angelic wings. Asmodians get pale-blue skin, harder expressions, and dark, leathery bat-like wings, with predatory details such as claws and a mane in the original design. Here the sources diverge slightly: Massively OP's writer, after the global test, noted that Asmodians appear to have lost some bestial features in the Western version. Mein-MMO's description is of the Korean look. Until NC publishes global character-creation material, assume the Asmodian design is toned down in the West and check it yourself in the creator, which offers over 200 adjustable features either way.
It does not decide your class
AION2 Hub and Mein-MMO both state that every class is available to both factions, and every character starts as an Adventurer before specialising. There is no faction-locked class in any source we read.
The disputed bit: do the factions play differently?
Mein-MMO's guide says skill effects differ thematically, with Elyos leaning toward light and speed and Asmodians toward shadow and raw power. No other source we consulted, including the community databases that publish per-rank skill values from the client, mentions any faction-based stat or damage-type difference, and NC has said nothing about it. Our reading: this is most likely a visual and lore flavour, as it was in the original Aion, rather than a balance difference. We flag it rather than repeat it as fact.
What about population?
Nobody has numbers. Because the factions live on separate servers and meet only in matched PvP, a lopsided split hurts less than it would on a shared world, but it still shapes the Abyss. NC's creator event, War for Atreia, splits sixty creators evenly between the factions, which tells you NC wants the choice to feel balanced; it does not tell you which side the player base will pick. Watch the launch server list on the EN-US notice board: how many pairs NC opens per region will be the first public signal.
Quick checklist
- Permanent: yes.
- Separate servers and starting zones: yes, confirmed by NC and by the test-server names.
- Class restrictions: none.
- Stat differences: none documented; one outlet describes thematic skill flavour.
- Appearance: distinct wings and features; Western Asmodians reportedly softened.
- PvP: optional everywhere except the Abyss, so the faction war is opt-in until you fly into Reshanta.
