Which AION 2 class should you pick at global launch?

Eight classes, two factions that can play all of them, and a balance patch cadence that makes any tier list a snapshot. What the official material says, what players agree on, and where they don't.

Start with the one thing every source agrees on: your faction does not limit your class. Elyos and Asmodians can each play all of them, and every character begins as an Adventurer before specialising. From there the picture gets fuzzier, so this guide separates what NC has said from what the community has concluded.

The official list

NC's June 2025 press release on AION 2's core content names eight classes: Gladiator, Templar, Assassin, Marksman, Sorcerer, Spiritmaster, Cleric and Chanter. Note the word Marksman. Fan sites, translated Korean patch notes and most players say Ranger, the original Aion name, and aion2db.gg predicts the global client will use NC's "Marksman". Until the launch client is in hand, expect both names for the bow class.

Korea added a ninth class, the Brawler, in July 2026. AION2 Hub, Mein-MMO and Massively OP all say it is not part of the global launch; aion2db.gg says it is. We side with the majority and with NC's stated plan to launch on a modified Season 1, which predates the Brawler.

Roles, as the community describes them

No official English role or weapon table exists, so the following comes from community databases and Mein-MMO's August class guide, cross-checked against skill names in the Korean patch notes.

  • Templar (sword and shield): the main tank. Mein-MMO rates it the most forgiving class for newcomers. Its rotation was rebuilt in Korea on August 26, so any guide older than that is stale.
  • Gladiator (greatsword): melee damage with off-tank durability and self-sustain; also rated beginner-friendly.
  • Assassin (dual daggers): stealth burst at short range. High skill floor; Mein-MMO puts it last for beginners. September's anti-macro patch lengthened its cancel windows, which will feel different from Korean videos filmed earlier.
  • Ranger / Marksman (bow): kiting, positional ranged damage. As of September 16 every attack carries wind, earth or fire damage in Korea.
  • Sorcerer (spellbook): burst and area magic with crowd control, mana-hungry. Fire Mark now procs on every fire hit in Korea.
  • Spiritmaster (orb or spellbook, sources differ): pet-based caster. AION2 Hub calls it DPS, aion2db.gg calls it Support, Mein-MMO calls it magical support with a pet. The truth is probably "both, depending on spec"; we flag it as unresolved.
  • Cleric (mace and shield): the strongest group healer, low personal damage. Mein-MMO notes reported loot-distribution issues for healers that NC has only partly addressed.
  • Chanter (staff): hybrid support and damage with auras. Its core trigger was reworked on August 26 and then partly reverted on September 2, a good example of why Korean balance should be read as volatile.

What players who have tried it say

Massively OP's writer played every class in the Launch Scale Test, mained a Chanter, and enjoyed the Cleric most for its sound design and lightning-and-earth aesthetic, while finding the classes mechanically similar at low level and the early game very easy. Mein-MMO's August verdict was that balance is "currently very good" with no unplayable class. Korean creator Kanon, after a thousand hours, scored combat 6.8/10 for turning into a spam-fest at the top end. None of that contradicts the others: the game is easy early, samey early, and the interesting differences show up in group content that most global players will not reach for weeks.

A hedged recommendation

If you want to be wanted in groups from day one, Templar or Cleric: tanks and healers are scarce in every MMO and both are rated easy to learn. If you want to solo the story and learn the combat model without punishment, Gladiator. If you value group utility over top damage, Chanter. Pick Assassin only if you already enjoy stealth classes elsewhere. And treat every tier list you see this autumn as a photograph of the Korean game on one particular Wednesday; the global client is tuned differently, and NC has said it will follow Korea's balance changes on a lagging schedule.

Open questions

  • Official English class names and one-line descriptions for the global client.
  • Whether the party-synergy nerfs of August 26 are in the global launch build.
  • Whether class change or a second class exists; no source we read mentions either.
